Anne Marie Engtoft Meldgaard, Denmark’s outgoing Tech Ambassador, has joined Sparrow Quantum as Chief Commercial Officer, moving from technology diplomacy into one of Europe’s most strategically important emerging industries. Her appointment comes as Europe seeks to turn decades of quantum research and photonics expertise into globally competitive companies and critical technology infrastructure.
For the past six years, Meldgaard has served as Denmark’s Tech Ambassador, a pioneering diplomatic role created to represent the Danish government to the global technology industry and in international governance forums for emerging technologies. At Sparrow Quantum, she will lead commercial strategy, partnerships, and international market development.
Sparrow Quantum was founded on research from the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen and develops photonic quantum hardware for next-generation quantum computers. We work with photonics, using light as a pathway to build scalable quantum technologies.
Photonics is attracting increasing attention in the global quantum race, not least because Europe has built strong research and industrial environments in the field over several decades.
While large parts of the quantum industry remain at the research stage, our team already established international partnerships, delivered hardware to customers globally, and built the foundation for our next phase of growth.
For Anne Marie Engtoft Meldgaard, the decision to join Sparrow Quantum was driven by the combination of timing, talent, and technological potential.
“It feels like one of those moments known from the early semiconductor stories in Silicon Valley: an advanced technology that may initially look like a niche product but later becomes a fundamental building block for an entirely new industry. There are few places in Europe where research, hardware development, and industrial ambition are as closely connected as they are at Sparrow Quantum. Sparrow Quantum can play a much larger strategic role in the European quantum industry than many may imagine today, and I look forward to helping bring the company into the top tier of the quantum industry.” — Anne Marie Engtoft Meldgaard
According to Peter Lodahl, Founder & Chief Quantum Officer at Sparrow Quantum, the company is entering a new phase at a moment when Europe is seeking to turn our strength in quantum research into industrial capacity.
“Sparrow Quantum was founded on deep scientific work, and we are now building the partnerships, products, and commercial position needed to contribute to Europe’s quantum industry. Anne Marie’s experience across technology, policy, and international markets makes her an invaluable part of that next phase,” — Peter Lodahl
Meldgaard’s appointment comes at a time when Europe’s quantum industry is moving from scientific excellence towards industrial execution. Sparrow Quantum’s work in photonic quantum hardware positions the company within one of the areas where Europe has both deep research strengths and a clear opportunity to build globally relevant companies.
“Europe has strong research environments and strong photonics capabilities, but we need to become better at translating that strength into companies, platforms and global influence. That is where Sparrow Quantum stands out: the company has already taken the difficult first steps from research to market and now has the opportunity to become a key player in the industrial development of quantum technology — and an important contributor to Europe’s technological sovereignty and digital ambitions.” — Anne Marie Engtoft Meldgaard
